#QubesOS why organize your folders when you have systems to sort?
Alright,
So the domain is baud.social
the idea is to build an activity pub compatible/aware piece of BBS software. Add some local only posting, some member to member email, a few door games, etc.
But, ultimately, it's an activity pub aware BBS.
We access it over telnet, we have optional actual dialup.
What's wrong with (modern) computing?
- Computers spy on us all the time
- Computers are insecure, while pretending not to to be.
- Computers enable new modes of rent seeking, further exasperated by shitty patents and worse laws
- Computers/the modern internet encourage behaviors which are bad for our mental health as individuals.
- Computers and the modern internet, in concert with modern capitalism have built a world essentially without public spaces.
You know, all that bullshit.
@atyh looks ok now. I was away for a couple weeks and was just catching up on my favorites :).
@atyh Hey, is your Gemini site down?
Today we will talk about the danger of phone apps, solutions, and alternatives.

I really wish I'd gotten to read stuff like this when I was a kid.
Hello! I am a scientist and parent looking to chat with folks about the future β the scary parts and also the hopeful parts. I'm interested in #permacomputing, the small internet, and doing more with less. I've been writing at http://degrowther.smol.pub/ and more recently sharing stuff at http://retrace.club/~mycorrhiza/. #introductions
On a road trip to visit friends and get handed half a dozen laptops belonging to the family's deceased patriarch. They want to preserve all the data because he was notoriously disorganized and some critical item could be on a machine that's ten years old.
I took the best one (a five year old ideapad with 12GB RAM and a 1TB spinner) and started using disk2vhd to create images from each of them and creating hyper-v machines of each. The usable machines can be reused, the sketchy ones wiped and sold/recycled.
Of course we're only here for a couple days so it's a late night... Tomorrow ought to be fun.
I have an old fridge. Runs great.
Got myself a treadle machine.
Picking up an old Kenmore on Monday.
I need an old stove without computerized ignition.
Would like to find an old washer/dryer.
And shopping for an old beater car.
Want to be in pretty good shape, should things fall apart.
EVERYTHING in our lives is computerized.
Seems -- ultimately, and in the wrong hands -- a vicious plot.

#Starnix is now 3 months old today!
Looking for 2022 recommendations for an ebook consumption device. Preferably something easy on the eyes (likely e-ink), and compatible with epub, pdf, plain text, and html. Zim would be nice. Network access isn't critical, but a nice to have for syncing a library. A 10-inch screen seems like it would be about right. Thanks!
Cracking open one of my favorite of #Heinlein's juveniles, "Have Space Suit - Will Travel". I miss the hope of the space age.
