Pleroma take AV1?
Let's find out
That's a yes
@splitshockvirus@pl.starnix.network Looks like shit on mastodon
@splitshockvirus@pl.starnix.network
Rare Pleroma W
VS actual dogshit
The original 64MBs and the transcoded is 78.2MBs and looks like shit
@splitshockvirus Sure I'll try it here ya go.
@10leej The problem is that mastodon re-encodes it into AVC upload.
VS
Pleroma will just store the file and serve that, mastodon will run it through ffmpeg.
I'm AV1pilled af rn. I turned a 307M file into 36M and it's basically acceptible even at 4k using -crf 63. If I transcoded it to 1080p it would gone down to 9MB.
I want everything running this now. I might edit mastodon just to get that codec.
This little thing right here.
-crf 63 the highest compression rating.
That's badass. How's compatibility? I've been encoding everything in h.265, and I can generally get ~50% compression on 4K HDR videos.
I don't know how compatibility is. I'm using libsvtav1 in ffmpeg, and I can play the videos in ungoogled chromium and mpv, I have a 1950X. I think the minimum required spec for CPU encoding is a processor with AVX2.
All the big tech companies are pushing for AV1 over h.265 because they don't want to pay the royalties, so i think they are eventually gonna get it.
intel meteor lake has av1 encoding, so does the new amd socs announced today, so we're gonna have more av1 capable hardware. idk about the situation on phones though
Honestly, that's encouraging to hear. I was on the fence about encoding all my stuff in h.265 at first, and originally used 264, but the gains in storage have been substantial, and all the devices that I use are compatible (at least for now), so I took the plunge.
how big is the move from h265->av1?
@mischievoustomato @10leej @tomcat
I heard that a 3500 kb video is compariable to a 6000 kb video using nvenc 265. But at higher bitrates the difference is not noticeable.
@tomcat @splitshockvirus unlike h.265 AV1 is a free codec, so the latest generation GPU's and ARM chips actually have support for it backed in.
@10leej
Say no more, I'm converted!
